To the extent you buy into Pro Football Focus, Whitner graded out well last year in Cleveland and very well the year before that in San Fran. Still an effective player it seems.

But yes, not a long term solution. But if he shores up some tackling and brings some big hits that keep the defense from getting discouraged, it helps keep everyone engaged this season, which still makes a positive impact.

The thing that gets lost is there's a potential negative effect on the current roster if we just sit idle. Players like to know their front office sees what they're seeing and tries as hard as they do to get Ws in the here and now. It helps build the culture you want.
