Maybe the FO read our poll and came to their senses. Personally I'm not so crazy about this deal anymore, I'd rather get Akoye and a pass rushing end in the 2nd round then Briggs and a pass rushing end. Then again Marcus and London aren't getting any younger, but thats why we have Rocky. I don't know maybe I'm confused.

Bears say 'No' to Briggs deal

The Bears are saying no to a Lance Briggs trade to Washington. That stand won't change during this week's owners meeting, but don't be surprised if they take the weekend and the early part of next week to study the concept.
The Redskins are willing to drop from No. 6 in the first round to No. 31 in a trade for the Bears linebacker. The Bears biggest problem is feeling bullied, which is why their initial position is "No."
Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has a great relationship with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, so it's no surprise he could use Snyder to shake up the Bears. The other problem is the Bears don't want to draft as high as No. 6. Still, this might be an interesting offer for a franchise player threatening to miss 10 regular season games. Give them the weekend to think about it.

The trade is definitely still a possibility. The shifting desert sands of rumorland are full of mirages. However, now we have the Bears publicly saying they are thinking it over. So that is real.

They say they weren't expecting this offer and want to consider it before deciding.

It seems to me they'll take the trade, getting a young player who will be less impactful on the cap, with more years ahead of him than Briggs, and who will be top tier in talent.

If it happens, we'll get a proven player who will lift us defensively. I don't buy this overconcern about the defensive line. We have players there, and we will have possibly the Bears' first round choice to bring in a bright prospect, probably a defensive lineman. Yes, we need to improve there, but the situation isn't dire like some fans think as far as I am concerned.

The Redskins would get two, really good, (probably) defensive players instead of just one with the sixth pick.

If the trade offer is true I think it's only a matter of time before it happens, the Bears figured if we are dumb enough to make this deal we might be dumb enough to kick something else in, and thier probably right.

I think all we need is one more LB and we are on our way, Briggs should make all the difference in the world, let the Bears trade down and draft a LB who's unproven to play on a championship caliber team, they will probably deal down and end up with 2 pro bowlers. As for us we will find that Briggs is not a pass rusher which is what we need, nor can he take on opposing guards and tackles which is something else we need. So let's get a LB who will get knocked into the parking lot by lineman with the likes of Andre Carter getting man handled by TE's leaving tackles and guards to pancake Briggs. Not to worry after a couple of weeks of talking about this trade they will have everyone believing what a great move it is, until we actually see we are getting a good LB not a great LB, and still need D-linemen, a safety, and a front line CB, and a guard.

The fact that we even made this proposal [if true] just shows the utter stupidity and incompetency of all involved.

Despite the vitriol of the criticism I think I have to agree with most points here. Lance Briggs is not the answer, he is just another high priced player groomed by another team. If we actually kept a couple of our draft picks maybe we could draft guys like Briggs in the Third Round (i.e. Cooley and Dock) and develop them ourselves rather than having to look to other teams to develop talent. Do the Redskins have so little faith in their scouting department that they don't even think they can score a Pro Bowl caliber player at the #6 overall pick? I went back and looked at Briggs' stats and, as Offhiss said, he has never proven himself a pass rusher, never having more than, I think, 2.5 sacks in a season. I guess he could be sort of a Derrick Brooks-style Willie Backer, but is there no chance that Rocky can be that guy? He was the 34th overall pick last year, basically a first round talent. If we have already busted out on the 34th pick then what makes everyone think whoever they get at 31 will be any good.

Two things occurred to me when I heard the Bears had apparently rejected the trade. It was a BAD move for both teams and apparently the Bears don't see anyone they really need at #6 and right after that I thought that they are posturing for something else. Hell if Danny thinks dropping 25 picks is a steal for a franchise player (b/c they normally cost two first right! What a business man, great deal!) then maybe they can squeeze out a future 2nd or 3rd as well. Hell we gave up Champ (at one of the top 3 most elite positions) and a 2nd for Portis (who I love, but who plays a non-elite position); we gave up a 3rd for Brunell who would have gotten cut and when no one else would have traded anything more than a 6th; we gave up a 3rd and a 4th for Llyod. Hell, if the Bears hold out long enough maybe they can get Dan to throw in Redskins One as part of the package along with our entire draft for the next three years. I thought this was finally the offseason when the Redskins just played it conservatively, that lasted less than a MONTH! Hopefully all of this is moot and the Bears have saved us, but I'm not so sure that is the case...I think we might hear more about this before it is done.

I hope it was a joke. I hope DS isn't making serious offers without conferring with Gibbs first. I hope DS isn't involved in player acquisition at all.

Hmm, I still don't like the idea of Dan Snyder "joking" at a bar, presumably after a few drinks, about trading first round draft picks for a disgruntled player anxious to play for another team.

For once, it would be nice to read reports of top members of the Redskins front office taking their job seriously.

I don't think joking around in a social setting should be misconstrued as someone not taking their job seriously.

I don't think Snyder reached his level of success by not taking things seriously.

Lighten up Skins fans, this was a joke from the start and a lot of us bought into it hook, line, and sinker.

Wasn't so much a joke like Danny tried to play a joke on the media or on us or anything, it was more that he made a half-joke to Drew about a trade for Briggs, Drew ran with it, and started up a rumor.

The way the rumor came out, with Glazer from Fox, Schefter from the NFL network, and Pastabelly from ESPN all over the story, it seemed to have legitimacy despite the fact that it made little football sense.

It sounds like a situation where Drew Rosenhaus either misunderstood Snyder's half-joke, or understood his joke perfectly but decided to use Snyder to drive interest in Briggs. Snyder just simply cracked a joke, it wasn't that he wasn't taking his job seriously. He just didn't expect Rosenhaus to run with it, and he certainly didn't expect three major media outlets to buy into it.
