Re: Chris Cooley signs contract extension!!

Cooley is the new face of the Washington Redskins and very popular in the locker room. His work ethic and skills have amazed me to be honest.

When Gibbs moved up in the draft to get him I'm sure nobody knew what the hell they were doing. Guess Gibbs knows his stuff afterall.

To think, Cooley was oh so close to becoming a hated Cowboy. The "tuna" had his eyes on him and wanted him badly.

Think that Cooley was in a much better place to command contract before season unlike Sean Taylor who still has more work to do........

GREAT NEWS!

Huh?

Parcells actually told Cooley that he didn't feel he could play in the NFL.

Per Cooley himself via an interview on Extremeskins:

Quote:
I always thought that I was good enough to play in the NFL. It was just kind of a joke to me that Coach Parcells didn’t think that I could play. I was kind of surprised. Really, I don’t use it too much, it’s just always there. I just always thought ‘what the hell?’

Didn't the draft order that year have Dallas as a possibility?

Parcells has been known to play head games with players to gain the most out of them. If they cannot take the heat he gets rid of them. He's like that father who's never happy with anything......

So he tells Cooley he's not good enough to be a pro player and drafts him. Already has the player with a chip on his should and ready to prove them wrong.

Heard an interveiw after Cooley torched Dallas for 3 TD's or something like that.....maybe its after the fact.......

Re: Chris Cooley signs contract extension!!

it could have easily been parcells trying to throw some of the other teams off, that had interest in cooley

Yeah but he said it straight to his face, this wasn't a case of Parcells working the media and trying to distract other teams. He told Cooley straight out that he didn't think he could play in the NFL.

Take it for what it is. The evidence strongly suggests that Parcells was not interested in Cooley. To assume anything else is just pure unfounded speculation.

Not true. Cowboys were going to draft him if Skins did not. That is 100% fact.

2004 NFL Draft:

Redskins shock all to move up to # 18 in the 3rd round and 81st overall and take Chris Cooley.

Dallas coaches are very upset by this because they were slotted to draft Cooley at # 20 in that round and 83rd overall.

I have read this many times and think its worth talking about. Parcells telling a player he can't play isn't enough. Why bother visiting him and insulting a guy in person if he's of no interest.

That's a friggin bargain for a player of his caliber. Way to go Skins. See what happens when we're proactive with resigning our core guys? First Betts, now Cooley. Two key offensive cogs, both at a bargain price.
He's a very nice player. You know Gibbs will always have himself a good tight end to block and catch. It's a good sign when your own draft picks warrant long term contracts.

Where is this from?

Either way I think it's easy to explain. He was scouted by the Cowboys scouts but Parcells has the final say. He scouts Cooley a bit himself, watches some tape, etc., and decides he doesn't like him and tells him so, end of story.

Why would Cooley make this up? And why would they want Cooley when they already had Witten?

The fact that they had and have Witten makes me sway towards your arguement. Just heard that and I think some teams do draft for best available even if they have a starter at that position. Cooley could have played fullback / hback for "tuna" like so many of his old teams had. Kind of like Richie Anderson or Byers on the Jets.

Re: Chris Cooley signs contract extension!!

It's hard to believe that anyone could look at Cooley and not be impressed. His ability to catch the ball alone makes him a standout. He has unbelievable hands. And he runs after the catch like John Riggins. If Parcells told him he couldn't play, he was way out to lunch. Parcells is, I think, a better judge of defensive talent. Defensive coaches can rely on the stopwatch too much. Cooley's 40 time is probably not that elite.

I know that after the fact, Parcells became a Cooley believer. He had very nice things to say about him before the game here last year. He basically said, "we would be a lot better if we had a guy who could do what he does." Of course you can't really say bad things about a guy when he scores three TDs on you in a game the year before.
