Re: Dolphins Work Out Clinton Portis...Decide Instead to Sign Larry Johnson
Why Portis is getting a look
Funny comment in story: There once was a fellow named Portis Who was so old he ran like a tortoise He said, "Pete, old pal, You'd best play me now, By next year I'll have rigor mortis." Read more: Why Portis is getting a look

Re: Dolphins Work Out Clinton Portis...Decide Instead to Sign Larry Johnson
He dressed in silly costumes, that means he wasn't committed.
He never played in preseason, even though there was that one year where he got injured tackling a defensive player returning a Mark Brunell interception in preseason. (2006) He never gave it his all on the field, see the one or two plays where he slipped and fell on an open field as citations. He called his starting quarterback gay, oh wait that was TO. He never ran for more than 1000 yards in a season, except in 2004, 2005 (when he set the 'Skins rushing record for most rushing yards in a season), 2007, and 2008. 4 out of 6 seasons as a Redskin? Horrible. Now I realize he had his faults, but for quite a while he was one of the 3 most talented offensive players on the Redskins, the others being Moss and Cooley.

Re: Dolphins Work Out Clinton Portis...Decide Instead to Sign Larry Johnson
I think all the ill-will about him is kind of seeping out right now because the very things about him that made him horrible here, and went overlooked by ownership and coaches, are the same things that are keeping him out of work right now.
No doubt in my mind he gave 90-100% on game days. However, he had a penchant for playing out of shape, falling down instead of taking a hit and maybe getting a 1st down, not practicing, all that stuff. I mean he showed up for his tryout in NE 20 pounds overweight, after reportedly losing 25 pounds in two weeks. That tells you right there he was sitting around not anticipating on playing again. If the reports are true, then he let himself get to 260 or higher. Why would he let himself get so far gone if he had all that fire and all that to get back in the NFL? What kind of message is he sending a prospective team? If someone signs him they will just get the same old crap out of him. I will eat my words if he signs somewhere and is in shape, and ends up being a team player and all that, practicing, etc...i just don't see him changing his stripes....

LJ did nothing during his stint with Cincinnati. Why the Dolphins think he would be able to produce in Miami is beyond me. The lifespan of RBs in the NFL is so short. One year they are on top, the next year they fall off. (Shaun Alexander, Tiki Barber, LJ, Portis, Rudi Johnson)

CP deserves to be treated with respect for sure, but by the same token, he has been 'done' for a long time. I was saying two years ago that he was finished - people laughed and snickered.
Portis, like other players, is fair game as far as being subjected to scrutiny. This is message board - it would be pretty dull if we were nice 24/7. CP will never play fb again. |
