Lol, I keep on leaning more towards his last name since it sounds like Du Hast. I mean guy already has a theme song.

I actually just looked at him on Scouts Inc and for some reason I came away not liking him. However now that I look at him again he actually seems like a very good fit. Personally I can't put my finger around why I didn't think he would work in a ZBS. Looking back it might have been the adequate top end speed. I think when looking for candidates I like to see above average, but still footwork and football IQ are the most important aspects of Zone Blocking lineman.

Quote:
Trait Scale
1 = Exceptional 2 = Above average 3 = Average 4 = Below average 5 = Marginal

Height-Weight-Speed -2 - Prototypical height and bulk and adequate top-end speed.

Awareness - 2 - Keeps head on a swivel and generally does a nice job of picking up line stunts/blitzes. Helps center/tackle when no one comes to him in pass protection. Appears to have some problems locating assignments at
the second level and is a better man-blocker than zone-blocker at this point.

Toughness -2 - A finisher who doesn't give up when he gets beaten off the snap and flashes the ability to put defenders on their backs when he gets into sound position. Appears to wear down at times and may lack ideal endurance.

Pass Protection -2 - Lacks elite explosiveness but is quick enough to prevent penetration in most cases. Does adequate job of sinking hips and rarely gives ground to bull-rushers. Over-commits and lunges at times so is vulnerable to effective double moves.

Run Blocking - 2 - Lower-body strength appears above-average and can drive defensive tackles off the ball when plays with sound leverage. Effective down-blocker who can collapse defensive tackles inside. Can get around the center when asked to trap. Though he doesn't show great body control in space is big enough to engulf linebackers and willing to throw his body around when he gets to the second level. Hands slip outside the defender's frame a little too often and holding could be an issue until he cleans up his technique.
I think that personally if we go QB/OT or OT/QB then Rendar would make a very smart 4th round pick. If not him then Mike Johnson (G, Alabama) would also be a smart choice. I think part of the reason you can get zone blocking lineman late in the draft is because only a handful of teams use them, just like how it used to be easy for 3-4 teams to draft their guys late since few teams used the 3-4, which is still kind of true today but a little harder since more teams are using the 3-4.

I agree. McCoy IMO has Heath Shuler written all over him. Mallett looks like a slow version of Drew Bledsoe.

This QB class is bad at best. I say we pass on drafting a qb on the first day.

Re: QB Class gets weaker

interesting thread but i still feel that this is a deep draft class at qb and there are a few guys who could pan out and be very good qb's, but i definitley don't want one in the first round

We're going to have two Colts under center!!! A gun slinger (Brennan) and a sharp shooter (McCoy)!

To be honest, people say that every year (save 2004 and even then people had doubts about Rivers and Big Ben, Eli was the only "sure thing"), and it's more based on the idea that QB's are hard to develop rather then the actual quality of the class. Especially during 2008. People also said the same thing about Stafford and Sanchez last year yet both of them look to be promising QB's of the future.

We have a coach now that has a great track record in developing QB's. I say if he sees one he likes at the fourth spot we should take him....er support him for taking said player.

I don't want Snead unless we get him in the fourth round, because he throws way to many picks. 4 against Oklahoma state and 5 against alabama. He's definitley not a 1st or second round pick IMO

The quality of QB's in this particular draft class isn't like every other year. It is very below average.

Also Shanahan has a great track record developing QB's? Like John Elway and Steve Young? They were both fully developed Hall of Famers before he even started working with them.

Who did he develop? Maybe Jake Plummer. Kind of.

Jay Cutler? See what I mean.

I hope we don't reach on a QB, but if we do pick a QB in the first round I will be hopeful that they really do see someone with that "it" factor which I have no doubt Shanahan should be able to recognize.

You're kidding about Young right?

Young was shaky as hell and almost got tossed to another team until the season that Shanahan came in; it's been pretty well spoken that Shanahan is who helped him turn it around.

I didn't realize that Shanahan came to San Fran that early in Young's development.

Jake Plummer was a pro bowl alternate under Shannahan. Brian Greise (3rd round pick) and Jay Cutler were also pro bowlers when playing for the Bronocs. The huge drop off in production from Cutler just shows how effective Shannahans system is when a guy can go from an 88 QB rating to barely a 70 over the course of a year. Shannahan knows how to get the most out of his QB's. Cutler the Bears QB isn't Shannahans fault. The one that threw for 4,500+ yards and 25 TD's in 2008 can be blamed on Shannahan

The QB class just got stronger. Jevan Snead declared himself eligable for the draft. Maybe worth taking in the second or third.

I ran some quick correlations on that sack rate data using some of my comparables, and I found that the higher the level of competition a guy faces in college, the more likely that his college sack rate is predictive in the NFL. There are always exceptions (Russell: 5.6% at LSU, 9.7% in NFL), but that bodes well for guys like Bradford and Robinson, poorly for guys like Clausen and Brown, and says basically nothing about Dan LeFevour and John Skelton.
