If the Seahawks released Matt Hasselback should the Skins make a run at signing him?

Saw a report that Matt Hasselback is entering the final year of his contract with the Seahawks and his cap number is $6.3 million and he may be a possible cut. With the coach leaving the team maybe the Seahawks would consider cutting him? If he were to get cut should the Skins make a run and sign him? If the Skins signed him I guess this would send the clear message to JC that he is not the future - Scout.com said Hasselback at 33 still has 3-4 good years left in his career. My gut tells me leave qb alone and just start building the lines....

I doubt they will cut him at all, but you will never know with him and Zorn's relationship it could happen.

Then those Expedia commercials will be really weird to watch. Could you imagine the tension on the set?

If we can not get Vick when he gets out of the pin I say Matt might be a good second choice.

They would be dumb to let him go. He's a proven pro-bowl talent when healthy, and 33 isn't over the hill for a QB by any means. They should draft a solid QB prospect and let him develop for a few years under Hasselbeck.

And if they do cut him, NO, we should not bring him here.

He still has some quality years left in him as a starter, not sure that he would want to come here as a backup.

If we were simply a QB away from a SB run then I'd say go for it. We're not, so let's not.

I'd love to have Hasselbeck on the roster, but obviously he would have to be cut first, and then the money issue would have to work. That, and the guy is clearly in decline, so if he doesn't give Zorn a significant discount (less than 3 mil a year, what TC is making), we'd be overpaying for sure.

Re: If the Seahawks released Matt Hasselback should the Skins make a run at signing him?

Now, here's a topic we can sink our teeth into!

If I put myself in Jim Zorn's shoes and Hasselbeck becomes available, then I would want him. This one is a no brainer for Zorn. Zorn has got to believe that he had better make the playoffs next year if he wants to stick around and he just may think that he would have a much better shot at the playoffs with Hasselbeck as his QB. He has already put the work in on Hasselbeck. HB knows the system Zorn wants to run and how to play the QB position the way Zorn wants it to be played.

Now, how does that sit with Dan Snyder and VC, especially since Zorn was brought in to develop JC? I don't know.

Personally, I have little doubt that HB would do a better job than JC as our QB in the short term and, for Zorn, there may not be a long term unless he wins in the short term.

In the interest of full disclosure, my thoughts on this topic are affected by my growing suspicion that JC's future in the NFL may be as a career backup QB.

The only way I bring in Hasselbeck is under these conditions: he comes cheap, and he understands that he is the clearcut backup for 2009 and is a mentor for JC.

Beyond that will depend on Campbell's development. If JC falters Hasselbeck takes over in 2010. If JC is worthy of a new contract and is the clear answer for the long term, we cut Hasselbeck to let him try to start elsewhere.

I totally agree with those conditions, and I also don't ever see that happening. There are enough teams out there in need of a quality starting QB that (IF he's cut) he won't have to take a backup role with a backup's paycheck.

Address a need first, like the lines or Marcus Washington's replacement. Cap space is tight this year, so they shouldn't make a run for Hasslebeck.
