San Diego had Rivers in waiting. It was obvious Brees wasn't going to be there forever. They had a choice to make and they decided to go with the younger, cheaper, and more long term option. Brees made it a tough choice since he started playing decent ball in '04 and '05, but that combo of factors played the role. Yes the injury factored into that too but I don't think it was ever a question of would he return to the same performance level. The injury was just bad timing.
